Re:Well... 16 Years, 6 Months ago
If I were to choose the weakest part of CalTrout it is communication, and within that is acknowledging its less than stellar performances. Every organization drops the ball some times. CT was undoubtedly well intentioned in NFF FERC negotiations, but clearly the river has been affected adversely. Do I think they'll ever publicly acknowledge that? Pretty slim chance of that. What organization does? Is there a chance mitigation can do anything to repair the situation? I hope so. If only for Dale's sake...

Don, I remember meeting you and liked you too and I'm certainly ready to move on as well.

I can understand how folks feel betrayed by the NFF. If the McCloud gets screwed up, I'm likely to light something on fire. I have only been a Cal Trout member for 5-6 years, heck I was BORN in 1974. I'm committed now and have the orgs that I give to regularly.

I really only know one guy at Cal Trout these days and that's Curtis. He seems like a pretty good guy. I fall on the side of things that wants CT to be as strong as they can be so that when they go into the fights they have to go into they have as much ammo as possible.

That being said, I would love to see them give you that apology. Heck, wearing my Development Director hat, that makes for a pretty interesting lapsed member solicitation... a "lessons learned" kind of thing. Hmm...

You're joking, right? How about "they didn't give a flying one about a river that doesn't pop up every month on some ff
magazine". And yes, the river has been clearly affected adversely, exactly like everybody told them months before they even signed. But hey... we were just a bunch of Oroville white trash meth adicts. How can we even think to argue with the "San Francisco biologists"? Who cares? Now it's just a beaten dead horse... did you see those last Simms boots with the built in deodorant?

For me... I hope they throw the mother of all the floods down the McCloud, the Pitt, the Upper Sac and the Trinity and then turn CT into a strip bar.

I'm sure if there was an organization that you supported w/ cash for years to fight on your behalf to protect your beloved trout water, who signed-off on out-of-season pulse flows on the USAC and those flows wiped out your favorite hatch, you would undertand how I feeled betrayed.

Now I know there has to be someone at Caltrout who could understand how I feel.

I've written to CT. e-mailed CT, but all I get back is several donation requests per year. All I can surmise is that's CT's focus is solely on recruting new members/money so they can "fight the good fight," and their current members do not warrant even a simple acknowledgement (other than a mass-mailed calendar, bumper sticker, or doodad that I'd rather they not purchase with my donation money). I'm no bean counter, but I think this a morally bad business model.

As to the dead horse thing. I'm not making any promises, but I'll try to do better in the future.

"Rivers course through my dreams, rivers cold and fast, rivers well-known and rivers nameless, rivers that seem like ribbons of blue water twisting through wide valleys, narrow rivers folded in layers of darkening shadow, rivers that have eroded down deep in a mountain's belly, sculpted the land, peeled back the planet's history exposing the texture of time itself."
— Harry Middleton (Rivers of Memory)

"Each night as I haul myself onto the back of county garbage truck no. 2, there is a familiar wind, some thread of moonglow or starlight, a splatter of dark rain on my skin, something that stirs my memory, and again, if even for a brief moment, I am on some mountain river, some stretch of bright water, full of possibilities, including the possibility of trout, perhaps one that, when hooked, will haul me in and out of time, in and out of life's mysterious and frightening, wondrous and incomprehensible continuum, even to the edges of the universe." -- Harry Middleton

Don, I can see your point and I can understand your frustration. If someone were to destroy the October Caddis on the Upper Sac, I'd probably go to war (with something, not sure what).

Did you see the article about Atlantic Salmon showing up in Paris? There wasn't even a recovery program. Gives one a little, tiny bit of hope for the future.

Don, CT is currently without an ED, but the chairman of the board is Jerome Yesavage. My experience with him was that he is true straight shooter. He was on the board when I worked there in 2001. I'd suggest contacting him, expressing your frustration with both the resolution of the NFF and the lack of response you've gotten in the past. I would hope that he would respond. If not, I guess screw them is the proper attitude. His e-mail is This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it .

When it comes to communication, not only are those inept bastards at CT "dropping the ball sometimes." as you state, they lead the league in fumbles every goddamned year, often breaking last year's fumble record by the 3rd game! When it comes to communication with their constituants, Knight and Wesloh are so damned butterfingered, that neither one of these assclowns could maintain a firm grip on their own johnson let alone be entrusted to carry the ball! There is NO excuse for NOT ever responding to constituants questions via email! Ever!

Obviously a heated topic. Can one of you guys/gals that is "in the know" throw me a link/links in regard(s) to what you are talking about, NFF Ferc. I know what it means and have a high level understanding but would like to read more since I have fished here for years and am embarassed that I don't have a better understanding of all that has happened and how it happened.

Thank you,
dryflychico (aka Josh)

We seek for slumbering trout
And whispering in their ears
Give them unquiet dreams;
Leaning softly out
From ferns that drop their tears
Over the young streams
